I mentioned last week that I was going to be taking a short mosaic class. The class is taught through the community education program at our local community college. The class is just three nights, and I had the second class last night. I decided to do a project based on an illustration from one of my all-time favorite childrens' books, Mary Blair's "I Can Fly". I know I've raved about her artwork before, but if you aren't familiar, you definitely need to check out her work - she's amazing!
Anyway, here is a close-up of the tree I'm using for my mosaic:
and here's my mosaic with the trunk and tree branches complete:
The instructor for the class remarked that my mosaic looked like a quilt, which I found interesting considering that she had no idea that I'm a quilter... makes me wonder about my own style and voice in my work - maybe something is emerging after all... I'll continue to post updates as the mosaic progresses. All in all, I can report that thus far it's been really fun to do, but is a little hard on the hands (all the glass cutting!).
oh-it's looking wonderful! can't wait to see how it progresses. I see a quilt-y look too:) and thank you for the link-I don't know her.

It's looking great - is this your first ever mosaic? If so, I'm hugely impressed. I've often fancied having a go at mosaic but am bad enough with pins and needles, and would certainly end up without any fingers if I had to deal with glass!

i can't wait to see your finished product. it looks great so far!

Oh it looks like its coming along wonderfully! I tried to order that book from Amazon last year and they kept sending me back order notices. This went on for 5 months till they sent me an email saying it was not available! Argh!

Your mosaic is coming along wonderfully...can't wait to see the end result.
And thanks for that children's book recommendation--I hadn't heard of it before, and it looks quite beautiful!

That is really pretty...a great interpretation of the illustration..can't wait to see how it finishes up. My mother inlaw has just expresed some interest in mosaics so we got her a few things to get started, for mothers day..now it's her b'day on saturday so we're going to find her some more tiles and plates to break up and Lily and I will paint her a centre piece tile.
