preschool madness

It's the end of the year at Brynne's preschool (2.5 weeks to go), and the year is ending with non-stop activity. We've enrolled her in the co-op program, which means that parents are required to work in the classroom for a certain number of hours per week, and we're also pretty involved in all sorts of fun activities. Each semester, the co-op has a 2-day, end-of-term bake sale to raise money for field trips and new classroom supplies. I baked up a storm on Sunday to prepare for the madness on Monday and Tuesday. Martha was in full effect as I mixed up batches of Peanut Butter Surprise Cookies (from Everyday Food Collectible Cookie Edition - Holiday 2006), Snickerdoodles, and Chocolate Crackles (both from the 2005 Holiday Cookies special issue of Martha Stewart Living). I forgot to snap pics before they were all packaged up, but here's a mediocre shot of the 3:

The classroom is currently in a temporary building with large windows, just the right height for walk-up and drive-up windows:

And of course, everyone is treated to service with a smile!

All three recipes were delicious - and I really mean that! Those of you who remember my cake-of-the-month experiment from last year will know that I can be critical of Martha's recipes, but these 3 were all extremely successful, and it's hard for me to pick a favorite.

The chocolate crackles are extremely rich, with a crunchy outer layer that separates a bit from a chewy, brownie-like interior. They are rolled in granulated sugar and then confectioner's sugar prior to baking - that is what gives them the gorgeous white crackles as they bake.

The peanut butter surprise cookies are also outstanding, and these were the first to sell out at the bake sale. The peanut butter cookie dough is really good - good enough to stand alone without the peanut butter cup smashed into the top. This dough is rolled in granulated sugar before baking, and this gives the exterior a nice caramelized, sugary exterior. And, of course, adding a peanut butter cup certainly doesn't hurt!

The snickerdoodles are simple, but I figured they were a bake sale must-have. The finished product was chewy, buttery (but not too buttery!), with just the right crunch from the cinnamon and sugar on the outside.

All of these recipes are online, but the peanut butter surprise recipe is the only one that is identical to the one I used. So, I'm including the recipes below in case someone wants to give them a try. Enjoy!

Snickerdoodles (makes about 20)

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 350. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt; set aside. Put butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in eggs. Reduce speed to low; gradually mix in flour mixture.

2. Stir together cinnamon and remaining 2 tablespoons sugar in a small bowl. Shape dough into 20 (1 3/4 - inch) balls; roll in cinnamon sugar. Space 3 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.

3. Bake cookies, rotating sheets halfway through, until edges are golden, 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool on sheets on wire racks. Cookies can be stored between layers of parchment in airtight containers at room temperature up to 3 days.

Chocolate Crackles (makes 5 dozen)

  • 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup confectioner's sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350. Melt chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring. Set aside, and let cool. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl; set aside.

2. Mix butter and brown sugar on medium speed until pale and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Mix in eggs and vanilla, and then the melted chocolate. Reduce speed to low; mix in flour mixture in 2 batches, alternating with the milk. Divide dough into 4 equal pieces. Wrap each in plastic; refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours.

3. Divide each piece into 16 (1-inch) balls. *Hint: don't use your hands to do this! Use a knife or spoon or other utensil - this dough melts instantly when handled!* Roll in granulated sugar to coat, then in confectioner's sugar to coat. Space 2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.

4. Bake until surfaces crack, about 14 minutes. Let cool on sheets on wire racks. Cookies can be stored between layers of parchment in airtight containers up to 3 days.

Catching up...

Geesh - it's been an incredibly long time since I've been able to sit down a write a post. Things over at superbuzzy are literally buzzing, and it's been keeping us on our toes. We completed a major upgrade to the site last weekend, and we now accept Paypal! More new things are in the works for the shop, and we're getting stuff done as quickly as our 2-woman show can!

I was so excited to see everyone's valentine's day crafts and activities. For the first time this year, we had a preschool party to prepare for. There's nothing quite as cute as a bunch of 3 and 4 year olds passing out valentines to their classmates. I think that the day is much more fun now that we can celebrate with Brynne. Just look at these cuties!

Vday_party

I finally got my crochet hook out again and made this little cutie for my sweetie:

Valentino

He came complete with a vintage "jump hour" watch around his waist as a gift for my valentine. I snatched up the pattern for this cute bear from anapaulaoli, and the pattern worked out perfectly. He has a female counterpart, so I need to find some time to make her as well... Check out all of her great patterns and finished amigurumi!

I made a trip down to Los Angeles to meet with a superbuzzy distributor (more great fabric coming soon!), and Brynne came along with me for the first time. After our meeting, I made my traditional stop at the Torrance Mitsuwa for lunch, and Brynne was thrilled to have her own child's bento, complete with Miffy plate!

Bento

Yes, life is definitely better with Miffy and jello!

Otherwise, life goes on as usual, just a bit more hectic! The balance in my life has completely disappeared, but a possible solution may be on the horizon. Change is a bit scary, but I'm gearing up to make a big leap... wish me luck!

Racing Quilt for a Nephew

And here we have the third quilt on the third day! You didn't think I could do it, did you?!? Just 2 weeks ago I learned that my nephew, who just turned 2, is obsessed with Matchbox cars. We hadn't yet purchased a Christmas gift for him, so I started thinking about a play mat that he could use to play with his cars. Since I didn't have much time to work on any complicated patchwork or applique, I started looking for panels that might work. I found a Matchbox Hero City panel that was perfect, and a coordinating construction vehicle fabric for the backing.

I added a piece of geometric blue fabric to the backing, and basted the pieces together. Then I used free-motion quilting to outline all of the roads and the mountain range along the top of the panel. I also quilted around the black border (between the blue and the scene). I used a bias-cut black and white check fabric for the binding, thinking it would look something like those checkered flags they wave at car races. The entire project was very quick, and it worked really well. It's the first whole cloth quilt I've made, and it was quite satisfying to have something come together so quickly!

The sun was definitely not cooperating for these photos, but here is the front:

and here is the back:

Rickys_playmat_2

and here is a detail of the back:

Rickys_playmat_3_1

I'm hoping my nephew will have fun driving his cars along the roads and having his own car races. I'll try to get some pictures if my vision becomes a reality!

I've got to run - we're *trying* to get to Denver today as we're supposed to be spending Christmas with family in Colorado this year. Think good thoughts for us as we hope to be on one of the first flights in once they re-open the airport! I'll try to post while we're away, but if I'm not able to, I'll be back on the 30th.

Happy and safe holidays to everyone!

WIP Friday - fall sweater for B

Despite appearances, I haven't (yet) forgotten my newly acquired skill: knitting. In fact, just yesterday I managed to run out to my lys to pick up some circulars for a new project. Amazingly, I was spot on with my gauge swatch, and I actually managed to cast on and get a few rows completed last night!

Sweater_1

I'm attempting this cute, but basic sweater from the Debbie Bliss Home book for my little munchkin. I snatched up a bunch of the cotton denim aran in this maroon/navy color on super sale a while back, and it's going to be the perfect fall sweater if I can manage to speed through it! The picture of the sweater here is a bit hard to see, but I really like the combination of the rolled edge with a bit of ribbing mixed in. Please think positive knitting thoughts for me as I attempt my second garment - eek!

More WIP folks converging over here.

I *heart* craft bloggers

Jello

as represented in this jello heart with blueberries... (As an aside, this fun recipe was in the latest issue of Chirp magazine - hands-down our favorite fun magazine for Brynne. It's designed for kids 3-6, and is full of fun stuff: coloring pages, mazes, short stories, games, crafts, etc. Three thumbs up from chez buzzville!)

Ahem - back to why I *heart* craft bloggers... I'm a bit behind on this one, but I've earned my latest merit badge:

Yes, I finally found the time to make the stitch booklet from the latest installment of Amy's incredible mailorder. And that's what made me so shmoopy about all of you - I read what you're all up to - the ups and downs; I'm constantly inspired, amused, and frustrated along with you; and most of all, I'm always blown away by the thoughtfulness and generosity you all show toward your fellow crafters... so cool! I  know you know what I'm talking about!

My completed needlebook case, and

Thanks Amy for being so awesome. Please don't let me forget to subscribe in the fall!

Fourth of July extravaganza

I hope all of my American friends are having a good 4th of July celebration. The city of Ventura has a great tradition known as the push-em, pull-em parade every year. The parade is just for kids, and they come dressed up with decorated strollers, wagons, mini-floats, bicycles, etc. We were quite busy this morning preparing Brynne and her parade tricycle for the parade. Much crafting in the pallette of red, white and blue! Here she is in her parade finery - as you can imagine, the spectacular hat didn't last long!

Parade_1

We had a great time amongst masses of kids and their parents walking through downtown, and Brynne was thrilled to be *in* the parade.

This past weekend we also had the chance to learn something new. As always, we went to our local swap meet on Saturday and Sunday mornings (although it's really more like a swap meet/farmer's market/rummage sale) to see what we might find. We didn't find much, but I did meet this nice man who had an interesting perspective on fighting terrorism:

Dsc02045

Apparently, all we need to do is wear patriotic undergarments, and then all will be well! I tried to take this picture guerilla-style, but he caught me in the act. Rather than getting irritable (which I fully expected), he offered me a free set. I politely declined his offer, but perhaps I shouldn't have...

3 and counting!

Although we've been celebrating for almost a month (because of family schedules, etc.), Brynne is officially 3 years old today. She's an amazing little creature... not sure what we would do without her, even though we often don't know what to do with her!

Still not quite sure how this all happened... maybe I need to consult with the book I thrifted this past weekend.

I've blogged about the ultra-cool Automoblox toy cars before, but just wanted to quickly post that Garnet Hill has the C9 sportscar model on sale for $25.00. Snatch these cuties up while you can!

valentine goodness

We're gearing up for a little getaway weekend - a surprise for Jerry so I won't tell you where we're going yet - and so we're doing some fun Valentine crafting at home. Today I made the multicolored crayons from Martha Stewart in a fun Valentine's Day palette: red, pink, orange, and purple. I used a silicone heart-shaped muffin pan and they worked great. The only thing that wasn't quite perfect is that I noticed when I pulled them out of the oven that all or some of the wax had separated to the top. I haven't noticed that this has affected how well they work, but I may need to scrape the wax layer off so that Brynne doesn't get too frustrated trying to draw with plain wax! I used washable crayons (of course!), and I don't know if this makes a difference in the baking, but maybe I'll see if standard crayons do the same thing. Anyone else have this happen?

Life as a toddler

Well, I had great plans of posting something fun and crafty, but as some of you are probably terribly familiar, life sometimes get in the way. I've been a bit blue lately about the increasing challenges of raising my little girl, and I'm currently really wondering if I'm up for the job. She's just a little over 2 1/2 now, and I guess we're well into the phase that many warned us about. It's so frustrating when our days are filled with battles, struggles, and tears... I miss the days where she was so happy and cheerful to just hang out, read books, play with toys, etc. Instead, her current favorite activity seems to be pushing mom's buttons as often as possible, ignoring mom's requests (or commands!) to stop, being obstinate, and creating impossible situations. Ugh! I know that so many of you have already been through this (or are currently in the midst with me), and so I keep telling myself that I can do this. But, each day becomes harder than the last, and my patience and mental fortitude appear to be fading fast.

I'm beginning to wonder if the fact that I work from home is part of the problem: because she sees me home all the time, I think she feels that I am at her disposal. It's *very* challenging to set limits and boundaries when I'm right next to her or in the next room. On top of that, our situation is one that inevitably leads to lots of guilt on my part - if I'm playing with her I feel guilty that I'm not working more, and if I'm working, I'm guilty of not spending enough time with my girl! I can't even begin to imagine what this would be like if I had 2 or even more children.

And so, I continue to hope that I am growing stronger and more patient, and that she and I will find a way to happily coexist through this time while she explores boundaries, learns to assert herself, and continues to investigate her roles in life. I know that all of the behaviors we're seeing are normal and an important part of her development, but more often than not I feel completely incapable of parenting in a responsible and effective manner.

Thanks for bearing with me on this post... this is what is at the forefront of my mind at the moment, and I need to find some way to process and learn from what we're going through. I'm hoping to get back to my old self really soon!
