In fact, he's been here a little while, but I wanted everything to settle in before I posted an update. Huge thank you to all of you who commented (especially you de-lurkers - hi!) with name suggestions. It was a huge help, and it really got us thinking. But, when push came to shove, we finally came up with something ourselves: Miles (applause for those of you who catch the double entendre!).
We are all settling in pretty well, although there are some "puppy issues" we're working out. He's generally very good, but he loves to chew (and has difficulty distinguishing his chew toys from Brynne's toys!), is pretty jumpy - especially when we wake up and get home, and he's still harassing our 2 cats a bit. In fact, the cat situation was getting pretty desperate: one of my cats wasn't coming in at all because she was so terrified (ours are indoor/outdoor). So, we implemented a lock-down and we're keeping everyone inside (except for doggie play and potty outside) until a cease-fire is reached. After all, the cats were here first! Of course, this means I am doing super potty duty: cat box for 2 inside, and dog doo outside. It's like diaper duty all over again!
The nice surprise in all of this is that Miles has become the sibling to Brynne that her parents refuse to produce (ahem). They spend lots of time every day playing inside and out, and I think they're starting to figure each other out. Miles is still used to some rough play, and we're working on that, but I'm optimistic that it will all work out.
And, what's it like to have a greyhound? Well, this might all change as he gets a bit older, but he's completely insane in the mornings! After he goes out to use the potty, he has to run - I mean has to RUN. I've learned this the hard way: I tried to shower first thing in the morning the first couple days we had him, and let me tell you that a greyhound running 40 miles per hour in a modestly-sized suburban home is a bit terrifying! Instead, we wake up, go outside, and he runs at top speed for a few minutes. Then he's totally pooped and comes inside for breakfast. That's my cue that it's safe to shower!
He's much too fast for my digital camera to catch - I've learned this the hard way!
But, let me assure you - this dog is amazingly fast. I know these dogs have been bred to run, but it's quite another thing to witness this in my own backyard!
He's a real sweetie, and he loves to wedge his pointy snout behind or under us to keep it warm. When Jerry gets up in the morning, he lets Miles out of his crate. Miles comes scrambling in, jumps in bed with me, and immediately burrows completely under the covers. At times I wonder what I was thinking to voluntarily take on yet another responsibility, but I think the payoffs for Brynne have already been fantastic, and we're all learning how to be a (slightly bigger) family.
