For the past few years, knitting has been all the rage, attracting hip pattern makers, ultra-cool knitting circles, stylish knitting books and magazines, and more blogs than I can shake a stick at (with more emerging each day). Since I've never learned to knit, I fall back on crocheting as my "watching tv, on a plane, or passenger in the car" crafty activity. I'm starting to see more and more fun blogs and crafters that feature crochet (lily's rooster, ohsewpretty, and momomoogie, Camilla Engman, to name a few), but I'm still not sure that crocheting is considered in the same "cool" category as is knitting. I'm hoping that more "closeted" crochet artists will come out and share their creations.
When I got the latest Anthropologie catalog, I was thrilled to see some gorgeous crocheted items in their catalog (then quickly dismayed at the prices!). Now, I'm trying to figure out if I have the skills to try and copy something like this:
or this:
Does anyone out there have suggestions for trying to copy these?

i don't have any suggestions, but i did want to let you know that Debbie Stroller who brought the knitting world Stitch n' Bitch, is currently putting together a crochet book! so maybe it will be considered as hip as knitting sooner than you think! ♥ teresa

i think the fact that it's still in the shadow of knitting makes it even more hip. as soon as the crochet word is out( crochet is the new black!) then it's no longer cool.isnt that how it works? but then, i am the unhip, so what do i know? :| i do love those tops though.

I learned to crochet from my grandmother, and would love to see better pattern support for crochet. For a long time, crochet sweater patterns in particular looked like they were trying (and failing) to imitate knitting. They're getting better, though: there's a sweater in Candy Babies that I'm going to try to redraft for my almost-five-year-old son. I love the crocheted items you posted--sadly, I have no idea how to recreate them!

If all else fails you could e-mail the pics to stitchdiva.com and see if she can come up with something. :|

You have made my day! I love crochet and knitting but here are 4 reasons why I love crochet more
1- You only have to hide one hook from little children and as soon as my little boys see a knitting needle they think 'oohh a sword'. Very dangerous.
2- It is easier to make 3D shapes with crochet
3- You can make such beautiful intricate patterns like the ones in this post and also chunky simple stitches.
4- Crochet is faster to work and easier to do
And of course it is hip!

The first garment appears to be a type of freeform. Looks like lace circles... hmm if I was going to try to create this I would search out lace doiley patterns and make the centres only, and then try to create pie shape "slices" by making only one side of the doily.
